I would warn for spoilers in this review but the spoiler is in the title, so I'm not going to bother.

Changeling is an otome game where the MCs is a changeling who doesn't know she's a changeling. She moves with her family back to her old hometown to be closer to an ailing grandfather, and on her second day back at school gets pushed into a magic clubhouse and told she's a "cryptic". It turns out that a large portion of the population in the little town where she grew up are also "cryptics," or supernatural beings of one sort of another. Most are either werewolves, vampires, fae or some sort of wizard/witch. Although the MC's friend immediately realizes that MC is a cryptic of some sort, exactly what sort of cryptic she is is uncertain to the characters through most of the game. The plot mostly revolves around the MC trying and failing to get a clue about herself, while also getting involved to various degrees with the story of the LI you've chosen to pursue.

I'm not really sure what to think about Changeling in the end. I sort of didn't have all that much fun with it, but it's also not significantly flawed outside of the tedium. I think if you want a long play where you can date guys and kind of like the supernatural but more as sprinkles on an otherwise mundane story this could actually be a game that goes down pretty well.

Description: Lies, manipulation, and mind wipes somehow coalesce into romance?

This is a game that relies a lot on romance logic making some of the weird shit that goes on okay. The idea is that there is a magic knife that can be used to make people forget completely about someone else. The man who owns the knife inherited it from his father, and with it he inherited the business of performing this operation on behalf of other people. He also happened to inherit a bondsman's shop along with it. It's a weird combo, and a premise I can safely say I've never seen before. If nothing else I do have to give the game some credit for that.

Characters running into each other in the game

The MC is a girl who has a shit criminal boyfriend, and when going to get a bond for him the bondsman informs her that he has this magical knife that he can use to make her boyfriend just forget about her completely. She decides to take him up on it, and since he doesn't charge her she decides to treat him to dinner as a thank you when it turns out to work just as he promised.

I somewhat regret replaying this one multiple times, because the first run, while effectively a kinetic novel, was cute, had some plot progression, and the ending was satisfying. I felt that the following runs only resulted in lowering my opinion of the way the story was told because these felt like subpar versions of the original story, not really new paths in their own right.

This is the third otome game I've played in the BLM bundle and I'm starting to see a trend. I go in, mildly apprehensive but willing to give the game a shot. Almost immediately a series of small moments is enough to squick me out and I think, ugh, ok, let's just get through this. Then, after playing for a little while those bad impressions tend to fall away, and the game becomes a little more interesting. Seduce Me fit that script closely, but it went a little further and I found myself actually enjoying my time with it once things got going, enough so that I started working towards completion without feeling obligated to do so. And the game is relatively large when you do this, so it's taken me some time to complete and move on from it. I'd say it's one of the largest games that I've played so far, with maybe Dry Drowning and Arcade Spirits beating it.

So while there were flaws with Seduce Me, I had a lot more fun with it than I expected and feel it was one of the better made games in the batch that I've played so far. However, if anyone is interested in purchasing this, a comment on the "Complete Story" itch.io page made note that it's cheaper to purchase each of the individual components separately than to buy the bundle.

I really like little retro OS simulators. They hit me in the nostalgia pretty hard for one, and they tend to play like puzzles, where you have to poke through all of the little applications and there are lots of ways to add fun little easter eggs or mini puzzles and games.  This game has all the usual doodads: a web browser, email, messaging, a tomagachi simulator, and an actual working text application where you can actually type, copy, and paste. Kinda cool.

Even with that significant problem I would suggest thing game. It's one of the better ones that is focused on transness in the bundle, for sure, and it's fun to play with characters that I really started feeling for by the end. It's not often that I can say a game had a real emotional impact on me, but this one did.

Description: The first scene of Inglorious Basterds. That's it, that's the game.

The Night Fisherman lasts about five minutes and is almost a direct copy of the intro scene of Inglorious Basterds. I've you've seen the movie you will know exactly what's up. There three choices, but the character you control doesn't have any of the power in the situation and while you can get a couple different endings the point here is not to get a good end. Instead of making the villain in this short a Nazi, like in the movie it copies, the game has opted to make the villain an "immigrant" hunter in the English Channel who gleefully shouts out Rule Britannia at the end of the game.

I'm not a huge fan of media that tries to say something but doesn't get much further than "X bad" The game has only got five minutes so it can't get much further than that. It also fails to hit the tension that Inglorious Basterds did with its longer, more drawn out scene. But hey, it's free and without bugs, so there's not much risk in giving it a quick run through.

This game doesn't lean much on novelty. It's a high school VN with two LIs, a straightforward plot with very few choices, and no real meta elements (unless you count playing a VN as a part of the story being meta). Your character is an abrasive, cursing, high energy girl who has just transferred to a new school and has never really made a friend. She's determined to become an  intelligence broker in order to achieve her childhood goal of finding her mother, who left her and her father when she was a small child. But she's super bad with people and generally oblivious to all social cues. Her process of training is to just brute force ask people as many questions about them as she can.

There are a few extra mini stories that are just texts and unlocked after you complete each path, which is it in terms of extra content. While the choice elements of Songs and Flowers are bare-bones, the two stories for the LIs are sweet and simple, and I enjoyed my time playing.

Name: Order a Pizza

Description: Groundhog day but the Pizza is fatal.

Your daughter complaining about you

A linear psychological game in which you are a divorced father trying to order pizza for dinner. With your annoyed daughter on one side of you and your concerned girlfriend on the other, you must order the perfect pizza to create the perfect circumstances for them to get to know each other.

The game sets you up for failure immediately, and after your first fuck up you find yourself in a groundhog's day scenario where it is time to try again, and again, and again, until things start getting surreal. There are minor jump scares in this game, which makes it more of a horror game than most ostensibly horror games in the BLM bundle, but the ending is a hopeful one.

Gameplay involves chatting with the npcs, then poking around the room a little to find clues as to what should make the best pizza, or later what the fuck the problem is. There is no choice "choice" in the game. The correct pizza order is always obvious, and you need to either not be paying any attention or actively sabotaging the game to see what happens to get it wrong. There is also no skip feature and no option to save, so even though each round has a pass or fail scenario, looking for all the fail scenarios was tedious and I didn't bother after doing just one of them. There's also a single round where the ordering system changed from having you choose which ingredients you want, to having you choose which ones you don't want. This led to a fail state I intended to avoid. But other than that the game was straightforward and simple, with a similarly straightforward message. Show the people in your life a little real attention, communicate, and appreciate them. And don't use pizza as a way to dodge actual emotional maturity.

This was an short game, but it was well done and was heartfelt, so if you if you want to see a minor fuckup of a guy figuring things out by having a psychotic break over pizza this is your game.

The pizza is in the window

Description: Navigating one bad date while your anxiety verbally abuses you.

This is a first date simulator where your anxiety provides constant commentary in the form of a little version of you popping up inside your own head. The game is made in unity and a fast play. A single run is maybe 10 minutes, and less than that if you's managed to fuck up royally. Your job is to say, if not the right thing, than at least the least wrong thing, to survive through the end of the night and maybe even get a second date. A lot of things manage to go very wrong. Your lyft guy is a pain in the ass. The kid taking your card at the movie theater is a smarmy brat, and your date runs into her ex at dinner. Meanwhile your date will not hesitate to ditch you if she's decided you're not what she's looking for. I played twice because the first time I managed to piss her off enough to make her leave over my giving my opinion on the movie we had watched. This I consider my true ending because I wouldn't be able to date anyone who took an opinion I had about media personally. We'd be fighting all the time! I just don't care if someone thinks something I like is trash so I don't really understand it when other people do. Although, true to the theme of the game, my dude did not explain his position without dipping a toe into his mouth. The next run I managed to thread the needle and said all the right things to be a considerate and friendly date, and got what I assume is the good end, where the woman is considering seeing me again.

The anxiety that pipes up every time things get a little awkward is an amusing little addition. Since the game is free and short, I don't really see any reason not to give it a go, although for me it highlighted the fact that one person's bad date might be another person's fun time.

Description: A vacation through not-Japan where you meet a cast of very strange NPCs

This is a cute, meandering game that feels like it falls just short of being professional and polished. The story is a bit of an odd one. You're the manifestation of a nightmare going on a nice little vacation to Kumo City, which is described as a weird overlap of realities but is basically a fusion of Tokyo and Taipei. While there you do some tourist things, meet a collection of colorful characters, and finally run into the person who manifested you into the world through their nightmares. The very first scene of the game suggests that this might be some sort of horror, or involve a somewhat darker theme, as you terrorize some small kid as a nightmare, but the tone immediately shifts after that scene and the rest of the game is a cutsey, light romp full of shenanigans and politeness set in a psychedelic world that is full of strange creatures that come from other dimensions. It drops the nightmare theme quick. There are lines after involving some dreaming, but the bulk of the game has nothing to do with nightmares, other than the fact that you were born from one.

There are no diverging paths, and the little side scenes with each character are pretty short, as is the game overall. It took me about 2 hours to complete I think, though I got distracted at some point in between and my records aren't perfect. While A Nightmare's Trip has a few flaws, it's nowhere near the worst I've played, and makes for a conflictless, straightforward, feel-good game.

As a demo, this game does its job. It gives me a sense of the tone, shows that the characters and dialog is appealing, provides for enough choice options to show that there is some decent logic that isn't confined to "good/bad" options, and makes me curious for more.

If you strip down all the extra mini games and simple combat system, what you reveal is a basic VN with poor pathing, that fails to make references to choices from scene to scene. Even though I liked the characters in this game, I can't say the story is well done because there are just too many errors in the scripting. If the fundamental question of what did or didn't happen in a certain run is something a game can't keep track of, I don't think I can call it a good game.

That said, I did play Roll+Heart through three times because I actually did want to romance some of the LIs, which is more than I can say for many VNs. Even though it's fucked up by the coding, the pacing of the game doesn't drag, and the LIs have fun personalities and are nice to get to know. It's a shame that the execution of everything is so sloppy. I'm not a Renpy evangelist, but games like this make me wish people would just use something that works and leave the gimmicks alone if they can't execute well.

This is a simple dating VN that takes place over the course of three days. The PC, Vil, is a salt delivery person, which is an important job because salt is the staple food in this universe. They are diligent and friendly and like chatting with their regular customers as they go through their route. Three of those regular customers serve as the LIs. You've got a guy who watches the city and direct services or law enforcement whenever there is needed. He's a soft spoken and diligent sort. Another guy works as a salt scout, and is rambunctious, friendly, and physically affectionate, the third LI is a shopkeeper at a honey shop. He's a little gruff but he cares about his bees. The townsfolk seem to have some sort of rumors about him which Vil thinks is quite rude, as the shopkeeper is a nice guy, just quiet.

If you are into wholesome monsterfucking this is a fun game. The characters here were more endearing to me than those in the many of the the deliberately soft and cute games that I've played before this, and they are all kind, and attentive people that make for lovely romances. The writing in the game is hyper otaku. It's set firmly in Japan with a strong American sense of humor and mindset, but it goes so hard on it I came to appreciate the dedication to the aesthetic. There are maybe a couple of moments, particularly in the end, where the transitions between scenes are not quite solid, but otherwise I found this to be a fun, relatively short little puzzle with a bunch of fun over the top supernatural themes.. It's a shame Malices doesn't have more polish, because mechanically it was fun to figure out. At a mere 1 dollar, I actually think this game is worth a buy, regardless of how it looks.

Because the path stories are about stuff that happens without you, the paths are devoid of tension. In one scene you literally do nothing but listen to NPCs do some conflict resolution planning. After running through two of these I decided to go for a bad end, and... it was also boring. I picked all the meanest options I could and the game sort of brushed them off for the most part, with the LI still treating me like a friend even though I told them I wasn't interested in things they liked, made them injure themselves, and so on and so forth, and finally I informed them their ex was dating someone else. They got upset about that, the two of us drifted apart, my character stopped caring about the school rivalry, which wasn't resolved, but like, I didn't care. The end.

There is clearly some sort of meta ending that must unlock after investing a little time completing paths, and those paths constantly allude to relationships between LIs that aren't explained in a single run, but if the leadup to the answers isn't interesting I don't know why reveals would be. Most of the time I'm willing to accept that the issue is a taste missmatch when I bounce off of a game like this, but even outside the cute handholdy tone and unappealing characters there are just fundamental problems with how the player character engages with the narrative that makes me feel like this is more a "you're doing great, sweetie" simulator than a story that the player has any stake in. If you're attracted to the fantasy of a supportive friend simulator you might like this. Otherwise I'd avoid.

This is a double review, because both Headliner and its sequel are very similar games. First is Headliner:

Headliner is a game that borrows some things from Papers, Please. You are an editor of a newspaper in charge of deciding which articles a paper runs with. You get about 7 rounds where you get a stack of potential articles to accept or reject, and when you're done for the day you go home to your family and have a conversation over dinner. When you finish one run of Novinews a new NPC is unlocked that you will meet in subsequent runs, and you get a new game plus mode where the fact that you are playing again is referenced in meta fashion, which I'm tired of at this point. The fact that a new game will play differently is probably good for people who enjoyed this more than I did. I felt like the outcomes of my decisions made some sense and were interesting enough, but even the sequel doesn't quite manage to make me actually care about what's going on, and without that investment the game was interesting but not engaging. If you like these sorts of quick choice games with some wild and drastically different endings the sequel is solid enough. I would skip the first game though.

While the writing is generally okay and the game does face down some heavy stuff regarding displaced communities, it felt like the mechanics were getting in the way of the story it was trying to tell and it trips over its feet a little by overcomplicating things. The game warns you upfront that it relies heavily on "2018 tumblr humor" but it's not too egregious. It does have a lot of zoomer humor in it, but it doesn't rely too much on complete randomness, or references that you had to be there to get, so I enjoyed it.
